I want to talk about, erm, horror films and why I like them and what my favourite types are.
When I was young, I watched the classic horror films like Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. My mum told me that when I was about six, she came downstairs in the middle of the night because there was a noise, and it was me watching The Omen on TV in the dark, on my own. So I guess I’ve always liked horror films.
I really like what are called ‘slasher films’ – the really gory, bloody, violent films like Final Destination and The Hills Have Eyes. I just find them quite funny and I like the special effects. I don’t really find them scary at all. I think the scariest sort of films are the ones that are very tense, like Hitchcock films. I think the scariest one for me is The Birds because it’s just very sinister the way that the birds come and sit and look at the people. And you know that it’s going to be really bad very soon.
But I think my favourite, favourite sort of horror films are zombie movies. I’ve watched loads of zombie movies and I really like them. Again, I don’t really think they’re very scary. Dawn of the Dead is my absolute favourite horror film, I think. It’s a film where people just wake up one morning and there are zombies everywhere. If a zombie bites you, you turn into a zombie. And the survivors end up in a shopping mall … in a shopping centre and they’re surrounded by zombies. And it does not have a happy ending.
There’s a British comedy horror film called Shaun of the Dead, which is a bit of a joke on the idea of the Dawn of the Dead, which is also really great. The most recent one I watched was a New Zealand film called Black Sheep, which is about zombie sheep. That was pretty funny as well.
The most recent horror film I watched was on a plane last time I went back to the UK. It was a Stephen King film, it was based on a Stephen King book – I think a short story – and it was called The Mist. It was about people who lived in a small town in America and there was a hurricane, or typhoon, as we call them here. And after the typhoon, they wanted to go into town to get some supplies to fix up the house. And it started to get misty or foggy. It was quite a strange mist – it didn’t look normal. And these people ended up in a hardware store in the town, all trapped together because there were sort of monsters in the mist – these unrealistic giant creatures that were in the mist that were killing people. There was quite a lot of blood and guts and people died in horrible ways, which is what I like about horror films. I would recommend it if you like horror films as much as I do.
Saddly, last year I wasn’t really commited with individual work at home. I created this E-portfolio at the first term of 2023 and I thought “this is an amazing way to stay in track and show my creativity skills”, while the time passed by, I actually uploaded almost NOTHING. I regret my lack of responsability because today I can’t see anything of my academic evolution, but what I do see is my new goals, challenges and expectations for this term.
In the first place, I want to make clear that outside of university I’m not used to arrive late ANYWHERE. I feel very dissapointed of myself when I don’t arrive on time, issue that I do have to make it on time to class. I think I’m not putting the importance needed in “details” that aren’t just details. Those “little” issues are demonstrating a lot of things of myself that I’m not proud of. I need to work on responsability in general, not only on univerisity, but also on my health and family, and that’s a big challenge for me.
In second place, last year I was very confident with my knowledge of the language. Instead of reinforce and learn more, I stayed with what I had and mi effort was only a fraction of what I can really do. Therefore, one of my many goals is to be exempt from all subjects, this year and all the career (maybe is too much but let me dream about it). Sometimes I feel that I’m putting too much importance in things that are temporary, and that’s why I have issues with my life and academic performance.
Finally, I wan’t to expose a little bit of myself and talk about my way to interact with people. Something that must people that knows me superficially know, is that I’m an extrovert. The issue with this is that I find very difficult the act of listening others, because my attention span is very reduced for different reasons. I have a lower percentage of hearing in my left ear and when there’s more than two people talking at the same time is a trouble for me to even understand words and my brain literally melts. Other reason is becuase of my low tolerance for ideologies and attitudes that I don’t share. Generally I don’t feel part of groups because I don’t listen or share certain things that aren’t that serious for me. Most of the time I feel I’m limiting myself from knowing and having less superficial relationships because of fear. We all have a story behind us and one of my expectations is that this academic year provides me with frendship, camaraderie and freedom.
KARIME I LOVE YOU <3
Dentist: Now the receptionist told me you’re a bit frightened of dentists. Is that right?
Khalid: Yes I’m terrified actually.
Dentist: Well I hope I can change your mind about me! So first of all, let me ask you a few questions about your dental history.
Khalid: OK, if you think it will help.
Dentist: I’m sure it will. Now can you remember your first visit to the dentist?
Khalid: Yes, I was only young but I had to have a … a filling.
Dentist: And why was that?
Khalid: I ate lots of sweets when I was a boy. You see, I’ve always loved sugary things.
Dentist: Go on.
Khalid: But the dentist didn’t explain anything. He switched on the drill and when that horrible noise started, I just started screaming!
Dentist: Wow! Didn’t he tell you anything about the procedure?
Khalid: No he didn’t, and it also was painfull after a couple of seconds!
Dentist: So… You’re telling me that he didn’t use anesthesia neither?
Khalid: I would have love him to do it! My mom wasn’t there because he told her that i needed to deal with all by myself!
Dentist: I am impressed! That is negligence! How could a doctor cause so much pain and trauma to a little boy and not having any responsability?
Khalid: I don’t know… When my mom listened my screams she tried to enter to the pavilion and the secretary didn’t let her!
Dentist: Im so sorry Khalid, I promess you this time is going to be different!
Khalid: Is my first time in a dentist after that, so I really hope this is going to be ok.

Alice: Morning! Oh at last, I’m back home after a killer night shift.
Khalid: Want me to put the kettle on?
Alice: Oh thanks. You’re a star! And here’s a reward for making the tea!
Khalid: What’s that?
Alice: A box of yummy chocs.
Khalid: That’s not like you, healthy nurse Alice, bringing something so naughty into the flat!
Alice: I’m not that much of a health nut.
Khalid: That’s not what Tim told me!
Alice: Oh don’t believe everything he tells you! Anyway, dig in.
Khalid: No, you first. What do you fancy?
Alice: Oh I’ll have an orange cream. Which one do you want?
Khalid: Toffee’s my favourite. I love the way it’s so mmh chewy … oh no … my filling’s come out!
Alice: Oh I’ll call the dentist and get you an appointment right away.
Khalid: No I hate dentists!
*Alice: But they are going to help you with your filling
*Khalid: I know! but I really don’t like the dentist
*Alice: Are you serious?
*Khalid: Yeah, I’m serious! I really hate going to the dentist!
*Alice: And… Why is that?
*Khalid: Im not very comfortable telling you…
*Alice: Oh! Come on! Im one of your best friends! I should already know…
*Khalid: Mmm I dont know Alice…
*Alice: Well if you dont want to is ok! But you need to go! It’s for your health!

Tim: What’s all that banging about?
Khalid: Oh I didn’t realise you were in. I thought I had the flat to myself. Do you like the new shelves?
Tim: You can’t just decide to start hammering things into walls. You need to get permission first. Have you checked with the landlord?
Khalid: Of course I have. Calm down Tim. I got his number from Helen, gave him a call and he gave me the thumb up.
Tim: Oh OK. Well in that case. Can I give you a hand?
Khalid: Sure, I need to checking if this one is straight.
Tim: Well, let me just put these books on it here and see if…
Khalid: No, wait, wait!
Tim: Sorry, was I a bit too quick?
*Khalid: What do you think?
*Tim: I’m sorry, Khalid. I was excited to help you.
*Khalid: Well, I don’t need your help anymore, thank you.
*Tim: Come on Khalid, don’t be like that.
*Khalid: You messed everything up!
*Tim: It was just a little mistake. Let’s try it again
*Khalid: Pff Okay, Tim. Try to be careful this time, please.
*Tim: Whatever you say, boss.
SCRIPT – Episode 101: Smoking in the loo
Tim: Hurry up in there.
Khalid: I’ll be out in a minute.
Tim: Oh, it stinks in here. Khalid, have you been smoking?
Khalid: Yeah but just a quick puff.
Tim: It doesn’t matter how tiny it is, you can’t smoke here.
Khalid: Why not? It’s not as if I’m smoking in the kitchen or the sitting room where is everyone.
Tim: Rules is rules mate. Cigarettes aren’t allowed and that’s that.
Khalid: It’s just cos you haven’t got a job, you’re hanging around the house spying on me.
Tim: I’m not. I’m just trying to save you the grief of the health lecture from Nurse Alice!
Khalid: Thanks Tim. I’ll put the kettle on for us both, OK?
SCRIPT – Episode 92: The cost of living
Tim: So how are you settling in then Khalid?
Khalid: There is going well Tim. You’ve all been really friendly, footy in the park and cups of teas in the afternoon. I can’t believe I get all this for only £75 a week.
Tim: How much?
Khalid: £75. I know it’s less than what you’re paying but us students need every discount we can get.
Tim: Oh yeah, I, I knew you’d got a discount, I just didn’t realise how much of one you’d wangled.
Khalid: Did I put my foot in it?
Tim: No, no Khalid but there’s, there’s an old saying “If you don’t ask, you don’t get” so maybe it’s time for this jobless one to start negotiating a bit too.
